Devlog #2 : Art Style

Hello again everyone! :D Today I wanted to talk to you about an art style for Wreckin' Ball Adventure.

On the one hand, I hate to work on a new art style, but on the another I love it. Maybe because it is another hard part of game development or maybe it’s just tricky? We have lots of ideas, but we are limited to picking only one and somehow we have to show our vision to art designer. All we know is that we want to release this game on Nintendo switch and PC. Wreckin' Ball Adventure is a perfect game for a switch, 1-4 players platformer. So the game has to look like some kind of "eye-candy" but be practical at the same time.

Kinga provided us with 3D models for prototype (Now she's working on UI and it's going to be great! :D, we will make another devlog about this) .

Anyway, she is a very good 2D artist and a wonderful person, but when it comes to 3D, she's still beginner.

As for someone who just started with 3D these graphics weren't that bad, they looked quite nice but they didn't draw attention.

We kind of felt that on PGA 2018 with is one of the biggest gaming event in Poland. (More about that in another devlog)

Wreckin’ Ball Adventure:

So when Kinga is working on UI, our 3D models are made by us, Rafał and Krystian.

After almost 2 weeks of thinking and talking about changes that we can make in Wreckin’ Ball Adventure art style to draw people attention, we finally got it.

We changed our color palette a bit, added more glow and polished some objects. Our main inspiration for the whole game was Portal 1 and 2 made by Valve.

I know, I know... You probably think that those game don't have anything in common with Nintendo games but we just loved the idea of a test chamber. We felt like it's the only way to improve our storytelling. At the first sight you can think that it's another lifeless/boring platformer but there's more to that. You just play in sterile, mysterious laboratory and from time to time you see windows that can be like puzzles if you look more closely.

So you are not getting just this fun and basic game to spend some time with, you are also getting a mystery that can drive you very far from main story. (We'll leave storytelling for yet another devlog).

best,

Marek
